During his testimony in front of the Senate Armed Services Committee, America’s top military official General Martin E. Dempsey admitted that the United States’ Arab allies in the middle east are funding ISIS.

Dempsey, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was asked by Republican Senator Lindsay Graham, “Do you know any major Arab ally that embraces ISIL?”

His response: “I know major Arab allies who fund them.”

“Yeah, but do they embrace them?” responded Graham. “They fund them because the Free Syrian Army couldn’t fight Assad. They were trying to beat Assad. I think they realized the folly of their ways.”

In reality, such “folly” is set to continue after President Barack Obama announced a plan to arm and train Syrian rebels that is set to be given the green light by Congress before the end of this week, despite the fact that so-called “moderate” rebels have defected to, fought alongside and given weapons to Islamic State militants.

As we have exhaustively documented, innumerable examples prove how Washington-backed FSA fighters and ISIS militants were moving closer even before the two groups signed a non-aggression pact last week.

In July it emerged that “several factions within the FSA, including Ahl Al Athar, Ibin al-Qa’im” had “handed over its weapons to the Islamic State in large numbers” and pledged allegiance to ISIS.

Three leading Syrian rebel commanders also announced back in December that they had relinquished ties with the Free Syrian Army’s Supreme Military Council, the military wing of the western-backed Syrian National Coalition, in order to join ISIS.

Islamic State fighter Abu Atheer also told Al-Jazeera, “We are buying weapons from the FSA. we bought 200 anti-aircraft missiles and Koncourse anti tank weapons. We have good relations with our brothers in the FSA. For us, the infidels are those who cooperate with the West to fight Islam.”

In addition, a recent study by Conflict Armament Research revealed that Islamic State militants obtained U.S. supplied weapons, including M16 assault rifles, which were originally smuggled out of Jordan and provided to so-called “moderate” FSA rebels.

ISIS terrorists also acquired M79 rockets which were initially given to FSA rebels by Saudi Arabia. The rockets, “were part of the arms shipments from Croatia that were meant for the Free Syrian Army. The weapons were either captured, or acquired by former FSA fighters as they joined ISIS,” reports LJR Review.

Arab allies Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Jordan have all provided funding, weapons and training for Islamic State militants.

As the Daily Beast’s Josh Rogin documents, “The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), now threatening Baghdad, was funded for years by wealthy donors in Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, three U.S. allies that have dual agendas in the war on terror.”

Not only have ISIS fighters received training and arms from America’s closest allies, but the group also obtained weapons as a result of the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in September 2012.

Earlier this month, General Thomas McInerney acknowledged that the United States “helped build ISIS” as a result of the Obama administration backing “some of the wrong people” in Syria, in addition to “some of those weapons from Benghazi (ending) up in the hands of ISIS.”

In addition to ISIS obtaining weapons from Benghazi, many members of the group were also trained by the United States at a secret base in Jordan in 2012.

Aaron Klein was told by Jordanian officials that, “dozens of future ISIS members were trained at the time as part of covert aid to the insurgents targeting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Syria.”

Given this history, the Obama administration’s plan to arm jihadists in Syria who are forging closer ties with ISIS will only exacerbate a problem which was partly created by Washington’s ludicrous policy to support FSA rebels in the first place, efforts which led to the destabilization of Syria and ISIS gaining a foothold in the region.
